Two seasons, not four
The Top End runs on two seasons. Tourism NT puts the Dry from May to October, with temperatures of roughly 21–32°C, humidity of about 20–35% and little to no rain. The Wet runs from November to April, with temperatures of about 25–33°C and humidity above 80%. Darwin's own dry-season figures are given as 20–33°C, and Tourism NT notes that June and July nights can drop to 16°C. January averages 429 mm of rain.
The figures look close on paper. In the body they are not. A Dry evening at Mindil feels like a warm bath you can step out of; a Wet evening feels like the bath has followed you inside.

Coming in the Dry
This is the season the site is named for. Clear evenings, the market twice a week, the lifeguards on market days in the middle months, and a sunset that barely moves — from 6.29pm in May and June to 6.44pm in October. If you can only come once, I would come between June and August, when the nights are coolest and the market is in full swing.
The flip side is demand. The Dry is when Darwin fills, and everything that faces the water is wanted. If your dates are fixed, send a request early and say which view you want; if they are loose, say so, and the desk can look across a range.

Coming in the Wet
The Wet is greener, louder and quieter all at once. The market is closed, the evenings are sticky, the sea carries a higher stinger risk, and the sky does whatever it likes. In exchange, the light can be extraordinary, the gardens behind the beach are at their most lush, and the pools become the centre of the day. This is when I would pick a Superior Lagoon Room and let the water do the work.
For the 2026–27 Wet there is one more thing to weigh: the resort's Stage 2 hotel renovation runs from 1 November 2026 to mid-April 2027. The resort says remaining facilities operate as normal but warns of occasional construction noise and temporary access changes. Ask which part of the property is affected on your dates — I explain why in the renovation note.

The shoulder weeks
April and October sit on the edge. The market opens on the last Thursday in April and closes on the last Thursday in October, so a late-April or mid-October trip gets you market nights with a little less crowd than the middle months. Tourism NT also lists the Deckchair Cinema season as running from April to November, which makes those shoulder weeks good for an outdoor film after dinner.
October is also when the stinger season is usually said to begin, so the sea becomes less inviting just as the heat climbs. Plan around the pools if you come then; the swimming safely page has the details.
Chapter 5What I would pack
- Light, loose clothes in both seasons; a thin layer for a June or July night by the water.
- Insect repellent for the gardens and the beach at dusk.
- A hat and real sun protection — the afternoon sun is strong even in the Dry.
- A physical credit card. The resort asks for one at check-in for pre-authorisation and does not accept a card on a phone.
- In the Wet, shoes that do not mind a downpour on the walk back from dinner.
