Chapter 1The month the sky changes
Tourism NT puts the start of the Wet in November. The first weeks of the Wet are often called the build-up, and the sky shows it before anything else: clouds that were absent all through the Dry begin to stack over the water in the afternoon, and by evening some of them have grown into storm cells.
On the 15th of November the sun sets at 6.52pm by the US Naval Observatory table, and civil twilight ends at 7.14pm. On a clear day that gives about twenty minutes of colour after the minute itself. On a build-up evening, those twenty minutes are impossible to predict. The sun can sink into a grey wall and simply disappear. Or a gap opens under the cloud and the whole underside of a storm lights up orange and violet, which is the kind of sky I would trade any clear Dry evening for.

What changes on the ground
- Humidity climbs above 80%, by Tourism NT's figures, and temperatures sit around 25–33°C.
- The market is closed; it reopens on the last Thursday of April.
- The stinger season is usually given as running from October to May. I would not swim in the sea.
- The resort's Stage 2 hotel renovation runs from 1 November 2026 to mid-April 2027.
How I would spend a build-up evening
In the lagoon from mid-afternoon, out by 5pm, a shower, and then a seat at Sandbar facing the water by 6.30pm. If the storm comes in, the deck becomes a front-row seat for the lightning out to sea. If it does not, you get one of the longest sunsets of the year. Either way, dinner at il Piatto or Dragon Court afterwards — check the night, because neither opens every day.
